City takes first step toward banning roadside memorials

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

Providence officials want to get rid of roadside memorials. They say they become obstacles and eyesores.

Many of those memorials have pictures of the victims, stuffed animals and even liquor bottles. And many memorials are often not taken care of and become eyesores.

On Thursday, the city council approved an ordinance that addresses the problem.

Officials say it's supposed to allow public works personnel to remove them when it seems appropriate.

The ordinance has not taken affect yet. The council still has to approve it again and the mayor must sign it into law.
