Authorities are warning drivers in Rhode Island to prepare for dangerous driving conditions when an upcoming winter storm brings a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain in a state suffering from a shortage of salt to treat roadways.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee says hazardous driving conditions will begin this weekend and last until salt shipments are delivered and made available. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency says the treacherous winter weather could affect the morning and evening commutes.
Public safety officials say drivers should be prepared to avoid unnecessary driving during the storm. They also should anticipate reduced speeds and low visibility.
State transportation officials urge drivers to use caution and have patience while traveling. They say people should monitor state agency websites and social media for new announcements.
