TAUNTON, Mass. -

Hundreds of fans turned out Friday at the Silver City Galleria to meet Olympic silver medalist and Taunton native Michelle Picard, a member of the women's hockey team.

The city of Taunton planned the homecoming celebration, which was free and open to the public.

Picard received a key to the city, and then signed autographs and posed for photographs with fans.

She had a special message for them.

"Just thank you. They've really outdone themselves every day. It's been really cool just seeing all the posters and all the excitement around it, so thank you. It's been great. Everyone's been so supportive and just so happy and excited," Picard told NBC 10. "Just so happy to be back with my family and just finally share the moment with them."

The U.S. women won the silver medal at the Sochi games, losing a heart-breaking match to Canada.
