Warwick teacher faces child pornography charges

Posted: Updated:

Rhode Island State Police said Friday that a social studies teacher in Warwick faces child pornography charges.

Investigators said no local children appear to be involved at this point.

Thomas Hewes, 52, of Cranston, was charged with indecent solicitation of a child, transfer of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He was arraigned in Kent County District Court and released on personal recognizance. Hewes was ordered to stay off the Internet and have no contact with children.

State police said Hewes is a teacher at Gorton Junior High School in Warwick.  The superintendent said Hewes was not in school Friday and that he has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

State police said they received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that a Meetme.com user with a profile identifying the user as a 16-year-old girl was soliciting sexual images from underage boys.

State police said agents seized two computers, an iPhone, an iPad and 24 USB flash drives during a search of Hewes' home. The flash drives were hidden in a basement drop ceiling. Investigators said they identified images and videos of alleged child pornography on digital media.
