The following is a news release from NBC 10.
NBC 10 was the most watched television news station in Southern New England during the recently completed February ratings period, according to just-released preliminary data from the Nielsen Company*. NBC 10 was number one in all time periods and beat the competition (WPRI/WNAC and WLNE) combined during NBC 10 News Sunrise, 5:30pm and 11:00pm. Not only did NBC 10 win all of these time periods, the station also showed substantial growth in each of these key day-parts. NBC 10 News at 6:00pm remains the highest rated newscast in the market. With a 10.4 rating, this newscast experienced 8% growth year-over-year and has an average of 64,000 households. According to the Nielsen Company, the Providence/New Bedford television market is seen in an estimated 614,880 households. Of the top seven highest-rated newscasts in the market, six are on NBC 10.
According to preliminary data, NBC News at 7pm once again tied former time-period powerhouse, Wheel of Fortune. With an estimated 8 rating, it remains the highest rated 7pm newscast in the country among all Nielsen metered markets.
“We are thankful to our loyal viewers for once again turning to 10 for all of their news and weather needs,” said Chris Lanni, NBC 10 News Director. “It was certainly a snowy month. With the largest weather team in Southern New England, we strive to have the most comprehensive and complete storm coverage.”
During the month of February, the NBC 10 I-Team revealed how much money Rhode Island’s three largest cities are paying out to employees simply for not leaving their jobs. In 2013, $6.1 million was paid out in longevity bonuses in Providence, $3.9 million was paid in Warwick, and $2.5 million was paid to workers in Cranston. In addition, an I-Team review of pension records found only a handful of independent medical exams are ordered for Providence city workers collecting tax-free disability checks, even though a city ordinance allows the city to order the exams each year to re-certify those on disability. Those pensions cost city taxpayers $22,011,406 per year. City officials told the I-Team that the re-certification exams are too expensive and are only done when they receive a complaint.
According to the most current data available from ComScore, WJAR’s main website, www.turnto10.com, is the most visited television website in the market. In February, it exceeded 8.5 million page views, an all-time record setting number. In addition, WJAR’s social media pages continue to be the largest among all media outlets in the market. NBC 10’s Facebook now has more than 80,000 fans. Its Twitter page is at nearly 23,000 followers.
