PROVIDENCE -

The boxing gym inside the Davey Lopes Recreation Complex in South Providence has closed amid allegations that unauthorized individuals were charging people for training sessions after gym hours.

An internal investigation by the city found that the gym violated several city policies, including renting the recreation center without a signed agreement and not having proper liability insurance.

The gym is operated by the Southside Athletic Club House of Pain. The group is expected to submit a proposal to the city that will include proof of insurance and legal waivers.

For residents who use the center, they hope the gym will reopen.

"It was really good because what it did was it taught me discipline. So whenever I got stressed out, I would come here and work out," said Brandon Mota.

Luie Victory also trained in the gym. He said it was an important part of his childhood.

"It was an opportunity to stay out of trouble and keep myself busy," the 19-year-old said. "I feel as though it not being here is going to impact the community because a lot of people from this neighborhood do use it."
