Suspect surrenders in Walmart store fire

Posted: Updated:

Newport police said a man accused of setting a fire inside a Walmart store surrendered Wednesday.

George Reddick, 58, of New York City, faces an arson charge and an unrelated charge of failing to appear for a pretrial conference in a 2012 shoplifting case.

Police said the fire in the Walmart store on J.T. Connell Highway broke out at about 6 p.m. Monday and was contained to two aisles. Everyone in the store was evacuated safely.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Reddick asking a store worker about a job and changing clothes while inside.

The store remained closed Wednesday. No date has been set for reopening.
