Providence nightclub has licenses revoked

PROVIDENCE -

A Providence nightclub had its licenses permanently revoked Thursday following a double shooting in January that critically injured two Massachusetts men.

A representative for the city's licensing board said Club Karma plans to appeal the board's decision to the state Department of Business Regulation.

According to The Providence Journal, lawyers for the city argued that the club should be held accountable for what takes place on their premises, with an incident like the double shooting warranting license revocation.

Police said two Boston gang members were injured in the shooting.

According to the newspaper, the club's lawyer, who is also a co-owner, said it's unfair to close Karma, and that the club's owners did everything they could to provide a safe environment for customers and staff.

The board voted unanimously to take away the club's licenses.

The club has been sanctioned for other violent episodes in the past few years.
