PROVIDENCE -

Nearly all schools in Rhode Island were closed Wednesday and more than three dozen flights were canceled at T.F. Green Airport as a winter storm dumped snow, sleet and rain across Southern New England.

Homeowners were faced with the task of shoveling thick, heavy, wet snow.

"I turned my back a little bit. I've probably been a little bit too ambitious," said Alex Mayer of Cranston. "I was shoveling earlier this morning, so I knew even then that it was a little wet and heavy. It is what it is. It's New England after all."

Snowfall totals were highest in the northern part of the state by Wednesday afternoon, with lower amounts along the coast. Eight inches of snow had fallen in Glocester, while Woonsocket, North Smithfield and Cumberland all saw more than 6 inches, the National Weather Service said. Four inches of snow was reported in South Kingstown.

Drivers found that roads that appeared to wet could be slippery. Police said a car flipped over on Interstate 295 in Cumberland at about 4 p.m.

Rhode Island State Police said they responded to 27 crashes as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority warned of delays. Peter Pan Bus Lines reported dozens of service cancellations.

Amtrak reported no problems on the Northeast Corridor, although service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg was suspended because of debris on the tracks.

Parking bans remained in effect in several communities.
