The Rhode Island Department of Health said Monday that two people died of the flu in January.

A man in his 50s died Jan. 1, and a man in his 80s died Jan. 25. Health officials said both men had underlying medical conditions.

Health Director Dr. Michael Fine said the flu season can stretch to April in Rhode Island and he urged anyone over 6 months old who hasn't had a flu shot to get one.

"If you have not yet been vaccinated this year, it’s not too late. When you get vaccinated, you are not just protecting yourself. You are also protecting the people you love," Fine said in a news release.

The Health Department said H1N1 is the dominant flu strain in Rhode Island and nationally.

The state said there have been 129 flu-related hospitalizations in Rhode Island to date.
