COVENTRY, R.I. -

Southern New England roads turned treacherous Monday as a storm brought snow to the area.

A person was killed after a pickup truck struck a tree and caught fire on Horton Street in Dighton. Police said an accident reconstruction team was at the scene.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim.

An SUV slammed into a utility pole in Coventry early Monday afternoon.

"My two dogs jumped off their feet. It was a big explosion," said John Rotondo, who witnessed the crash.

Rotondo said he saw the vehicle fishtail on the snowy road then hit the pole.

"Blew out two transformers, live wires came down, arced across each other, made another explosion right in the street over there," Rotondo said.

Rotondo said he saw the male passenger get out of the car. The female driver stayed inside until she could be rescued.

"The rescue had to wait for the electric company to come shut off power. It took a little bit of time to get her out of the truck," said Kristina Challberg.

Fire officials said the man and woman suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

By midday, this was the worst of the accidents they encountered in the storm.

"Roads have gotten pretty bad over the last two hours. Not a lot of accidents, but a lot of near misses," said Coventry Fire District Chief Andrew Petra.

Dozens of public school districts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts canceled afternoon activities.

T.F. Green Airport in Warwick reported that some flights were canceled Monday morning and afternoon.

Storm Team 10 said another system will bring snow or a mix of snow and rain beginning early Wednesday morning.
