RI lawmaker wants to regulate drones

Posted: Updated:

A Rhode Island lawmaker says the state needs to put rules in place for the use of drones by law enforcement agencies.

State Rep. Teresa Tanzi announced Friday that she has reintroduced legislation that would require police and other law enforcement agencies to hold public hearings before acquiring a drone aircraft. The agency would need the approval of local leaders, or, in the case of a state agency, the governor.

Finally, the agency would have to consult with the state attorney general and get court approval before using the drone in specific investigations.

Tanzi, a South Kingstown Democrat, says it's "only a matter of time" before local law enforcement agencies begin using drones, and that the state should have clear rules in place first to protect the rights of citizens.
