Five people injured in wrong-way crash on I-95

SCITUATE, R.I. -

Flashing lights and emergency vehicles were on the scene around 3:00 Sunday morning on 95 North near the ramp to 195 when a vehicle traveling the wrong way slammed head on into another vehicle.

According to Lieutenant Robert Wall, Rhode Island State Police, the incident is "still under investigation. It's ongoing. We're looking into all the factors that may have led to the crash, but at this time, it's still ongoing."

State police tell NBC 10 that there were three people traveling in a sedan going northbound, and two people, a male and female, both in their 20s traveling the wrong way in another sedan when the crash occurred.  All five were taken to the hospital, and while the three in the northbound car have been released the other two remain critical at Rhode Island Hospital.

Although it has yet to be determined if alcohol was definitely involved in this incident, police say it's important for other motorists to report any such behavior on the roadways, especially wrong-way drivers by dialing star-77 or 911.

According to Lieutenant Wall "this is an ongoing problem. Some get reported, some don't, but unfortunately some end up with a result in a head-on collision with an innocent motorist."
