A Pawtucket woman accused of dumping a puppy in the trash and lying about it was ordered Wednesday to undergo mental health treatment.

Jennifer McRae, 32, appeared in Providence District Court. After meeting with a court clinician, it was determined that she will undergo mental health care while awaiting trial. She's is due back in court next month.

McRae is accused of leaving the dog, in a crate, in a trash bin on Harrison Street in Pawtucket on Dec. 19.

Police said McRae called them and said she had given the dog to a friend because her landlord wouldn't allow pets. But when investigators tried to track down the friend, they discovered she didn't exist and that McRae apparently invented the woman to take suspicion off of her.

The puppy was adopted by a family in Lincoln.
