Fire rips through Tiverton Flea Market

TIVERTON, R.I. -

Eleven fire departments broke down doors and climbed on roofs battling fire, ice and smoke for two-and-a -half hours early Wednesday at the Tiverton Flea Market.

"Because of the nature of the building that's here -- it's a flea market with a lot of equipment and a lot of things around it -- it was very difficult to get into the building and get in and search," Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd.

One firefighter was injured battling the fire, which broke out just after midnight. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Storefronts were another story.

"Two of them will be considered a total loss," Lloyd said.

The Tiverton Flea Market is one of the largest flea markets in the state. Shop owners pride themselves on staying open year-round. The fire damaged seven of the market's 50 businesses. They won't reopen anytime soon.

How the fire started remains unknown, but the fire is not considered suspicious.

"The state fire marshal's office is starting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire," Lloyd said.

Shop owners said it was difficult to look at the damage.
