PROVIDENCE -

A man faces charges after state police said Tuesday he tried to run two troopers down with his car following a hit-and-run accident in Providence.

State police said 22-year-old Ramel Mitchell, of Providence, was charged with two counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, duty to stop-accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license.

Mitchell was arraigned in District Court. A judge set bail at $50,000 with surety.

According to police, Mitchell was driving a car in Providence at about 1 a.m. Tuesday with three passengers when he struck another car and fled the accident scene. Police said Mitchell's car was later stopped by two troopers in the McDonald's parking lot at the intersection of North Main Street and Doyle Avenue.

As the troopers were approaching Mitchell's car, Mitchell attempted to exit the parking lot and drove directly at both troopers.

Police said one trooper fired a shot into the car. The bullet hit the windshield and did not hit anyone.

Mitchell stopped the car and was placed into custody after a brief struggle with police.

Police also arrested two of the passengers in Mitchell's car. Police said 20-year-old Shaqua Brown, of Providence, was charged with failure to appear in court for an arraignment on a charge of shoplifting, and police said 22-year-old Paresha Evans, of Providence, was charged with possession of crack cocaine.

A fourth passenger was not charged and later released.

One trooper was treated at Miriam Hospital after police said he cut his hand during the struggle.

Because a shot was fired, Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General's office are investigating the incident.
