Decision reached on fate of Tiverton employee

Posted: Updated:
TIVERTON, R.I. - The Tiverton Town Council discussed the future of maintenance foreman Bob Martin on Monday night.

The I-Team has learned a decision has been reached by town leaders on the future of a suspended maintenance foreman but the details of that decision have not been revealed.

Martin's job has been in limbo for three months, when he was suspended without pay in early November following several I-Team reports.

The I-Team watched Martin for two months over the summer and fall, recording his activities.

The I-Team often found the long-time maintenance foreman working on his own rental properties on town time. Martin owns at least eight properties in Tiverton and Fall River.

Martin denied that he was on town time. However, town records tell a different story.  Each time the I-Team watched Martin, he was officially on the clock.

Days after the I-Team reports, Town Administrator Jim Goncalco abruptly retired and Martin was suspended without pay. The Rhode Island State Police also opened an investigation.

The I-Team learned no criminal charges will be filed, but Martin’s future with the town was discussed behind closed doors.
"We're working on some sort of agreement and obviously both sides have to come to an agreement before we can announce what the outcome will be," Town Council President Edward Roderick told the I-Team.

Roderick said we can expect an announcement before the end of the week.

Some residents at Monday night's meeting called for Martin's firing, saying they did not want to see him retire and collect a pension.
