A documentary is in production that will tell the story of the Ladd Center in Exeter.
It closed in 1994 after 80-plus years of housing people with developmental disabilities. The filmmakers know first-hand what it was like, because they grew up there.
The Ladd Center opened in 1908 as the Rhode Island School for the Feeble Minded. It was where those who had developmental disabilities, or those who were just not wanted, went to live out their lives, often neglected and abused.
As the project to tell the story of Ladd starting coming together, a self-advocacy group became part of the team.
The filmmakers include some who lived there and some who might have been sent there if they were born decades ago.
The producers have started an indiegogo.com campaign to raise more money to finish the film.
So far, people have pledged $23,000. They need a total of $50,000, and they have 29 days left to do that.
