Digging Deeper: Causes of chimney fires

Posted: Updated:

Having a chimney cleaned doesn't guarantee it won't catch fire.

Experience chimney sweeps say deteriorated mortar within the brick, cracked tiles, anything in an older chimney that has broken down over the years can be a hazard.

The Rehoboth fire chief said a fire Wednesday night on Moulton Street was started by a compromised liner inside the chimney that slowly spread the fire for hours through the walls of the house before being detected.

There have been eight fires related to chimneys in Rehoboth alone over the past two months, including at a historic house on Brook Street.
