NEWPORT, R.I. -

Police said Friday that a 59-year-old Middletown woman who as hit by a pickup truck in Newport has died.

Sharon Gerlach was crossing Bellevue Avenue in a crosswalk at about 2:25 p.m. Thursday when she was struck.  She was taken to Newport Hospital and transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, where she died.

Newport police said the driver, Craig Madison, 64, of Exeter, didn't see Gerlach and that he stopped and tried to help her.  Investigators said sun glare or black ice may have contributed to the crash.

Madison has not been charged with a crime, but he was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Gerlach and her sister, Janet Curren, are the owners of Portobello Jewelers on Bellevue Avenue.
