Group lists 'endangered' Providence properties

PROVIDENCE -

The lawn of the Rhode Island State House and the tallest building in the state are being called endangered by a Providence preservation group.

The Providence Preservation Society released a list on Thursday of properties in the capital it says are most in threat of deterioration, neglect and demolition.

Among those listed is the State House lawn. The group says there have been inappropriate changes to the landscape to expand parking on the property.

It also lists the Industrial Trust tower, a downtown skyscraper that has been vacant since last year, when its sole tenant moved out. The owner had pushed a plan to turn it into apartments but said he needed state tax credits. That plan was rebuffed.

The group says the building is at risk of deteriorating.

PPS's 10 Most Endangered Properties:

  • 57 Federal St.
  • Atlantic Mills
  • Bomes Theater
  • Doyle Avenue Historic District
  • Grace Church Cemetery and Cottage
  • Historic Houses of Worship
  • Industrial Trust building
  • Former Rhode Island Department of Transportation Headquarters and Garage
  • Rhode Island State House Lawn
  • Ward Baking Co. Administration Building
