NEWPORT, R.I. -

Police say a 56-year-old Newport man died after he was stuck by a car while crossing the street in his wheelchair.

Police said they are not sure whether Robert Silvia died as a result of injuries related to the accident. Silvia died in the hospital Wednesday following a second surgery. He was hit by a car in a crosswalk on Memorial Boulevard on Friday.

The car was driven by 31-year-old Matthew McColgan of Middletown. McColgan was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and for driving without insurance.

Lt. William Fitzgerald told NBC 10 that police are investigating possible criminal charges.
