Schools across RI close following winter wallop

Posted: Updated:
EAST GREENWICH, R.I. - Cathy Burgess let her dogs out to play in the snow at East Greenwich High School on Wednesday morning.

Her son, however, was at home and sleeping.

A storm that started Tuesday and lasted into Wednesday morning packed a winter wallop and dumped several inches of snow across the region.

Several schools were forced to close.

And although the extra sleep is nice now, it comes with a price.

East Greenwich Superintendent Victor Mercurio said Wednesday was the second day school was canceled because of snow. He said the two canceled days plus early release days mean the last day of school will be pushed back.

The Rhode Island Education Commissioner's office said most districts picked the last day of school by factoring in a few snow days.

School is expected to resume Thursday.
