BOSTON -

Gov. Deval Patrick postponed his annual State of the Commonwealth address due to the winter storm bearing down on the region.

The speech was scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday, but the governor said he decided to postpone it in light of the snow emergency and his decision to release non-emergency state workers.

Forecasts are calling for several inches of snow and possible blizzard conditions in parts of Massachusetts.

Patrick said his staff is coordinating with the Legislature to reschedule the speech, which will be his final one as governor.

The governor said he will deliver his annual state budget to lawmakers as scheduled on Wednesday. He had planned to preview some of his budget priorities in the speech.

Patrick is completing his second four-year term and is not running for re-election. He has said he plans to return to the private sector after leaving office.
