Former lawmaker convicted of embezzlement

Posted: Updated:

A former Rhode Island state senator was convicted Wednesday of embezzlement and conspiracy.

The attorney general said former Sen. Patrick McDonald of Saunderstown was found guilty of three counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy for stealing about $163,000 from clients during real estate closings.

Prosecutors said McDonald used funds in escrow to pay for his law office, house expenses, and dinners and hotel stays for himself and his mistress.

"Patrick McDonald created an elaborate web of deceit to conceal his crimes and he violated the trust of his clients to pay for his adulterous lifestyle," Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said in a statement.

McDonald was being held at the ACI pending a bail hearing Jan. 23.
