A Pawtucket woman is accused of throwing a puppy in a trash bin and lying to police about it.

Jennifer McRae was arrested Friday and charged with abandonment of animals, unnecessary cruelty of animals and obstructing an officer.

Police said the dog, which was in a crate, was found Dec. 19 in a trash bin on Harrison Street. Animal control officers said the dog was in good condition.

Police said McRae called them and said she had given the dog to a friend because her landlord wouldn't allow pets. But when investigators tried to track down the friend, they discovered she didn't exist and that McRae apparently invented the woman to take suspicion off of her.

McRae, 32, was released on $2,500 personal recognizance.

The dog has been adopted by a family in Lincoln.
