New Vessel Christened at Austal USA

Mobile, AL -

Massachusetts First Lady, Diane Patrick christened Austal's newest joint high speed vessel Saturday morning. The USNS Fall River is named for the city in Massachusetts.

"Fall River is a scrappy city in Massachusetts. It is home of hard-working, blue collar, hard-working citizens, and in so many ways this ship represents what the people of Fall River represent," says Patrick.

Work on Fall River began at Austal last year in the middle of a busy time for the ship maker.

"We started construction for three different ships, laid the keel for three ships, including Fall River back in May, launched two, and completed trials and deliveries for two more," said Austal's president, Craig Perciavalle.

2014 should be even busier at Austal.

"We're certainly optimistic that if we continue to perform the way we are performing, that we will have a long future of providing solutions and ships to our Navy going forward," says Perciavalle.

For the Navy, this is welcome news.

"It's what makes our presence in the Navy possible; not just in the right place at the right time, but in the right place all the time," said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus

Alabama's newest congressman Bradley Byrne says a priority of his is to make sure the Mobile area continues producing vessels like the Fall River.

"We've got to work hard to make sure we continue to build these vessels way into the future. That's a big inspiration for me as I serve in the armed services committee," said Congressman Byrd.

Up next for the Fall River is a series of sea-trials to make sure everything is ship-shape, before being turned over to the Navy for service.
