CRANSTON, R.I. -

Two Cranston city councilmen will be asking Rhode Island State Police to conduct an investigation into an overnight parking ticket scandal in the city, the NBC 10 I-Team has learned.

The docket for a city council meeting slated for Thursday night shows that a resolution will be introduced buy councilmen Steven Stycos and Paul Archetto. The resolution asks for state police to conduct an independent investigation into the ticket scandal.

Several weeks ago, the two councilmen, along with a story the I-Team, brought to light an apparent abuse of power by some police officers in Cranston.

Sources told the I-Team that some officers were either directly or indirectly ordered to issue more overnight parking tickets than usual in the wards represented by councilmen Stycos and Archetto.

The order, according to two sources, was given by police union president Stephen Antonucci.

The two councilmen in December voted against a proposed new police union contract.

Several phone calls placed to Antonucci were not returned.

After the alleged abuse of police power was brought to light, Mayor Allan Fung ordered an internal investigation, and hired an out-of-state investigator to review the findings of the internal police investigation.
