Still plenty to do despite Bright Night cancellation

PROVIDENCE -

The annual Providence Bright Night New Year's Eve event was canceled this year due to a lack of funding. Residents and visitors say they may have to be a bit more creative to find a good time locally.

Brian Hodge, director of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitor's Bureau said residents can find New Year's Eve celebrations at the convention website.

From arts to ice skating on Kennedy Plaza, organizers say despite the obstacles there's still plenty to do in Rhode Island.

"With no Bright Night, there's not that one sort of singular event so to speak. But there's still a lot going on. You have Big East basketball starting at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, and you have many theater events going on. There's 'Wicked' at the Providence Performing Arts Center, also this year there's sort of, I think, a unique opportunity to go out and explore maybe things like a Providence Children's Museum or the RISD Museum," Hodge said.

But if a themed party is more your thing, the Dorrance in Providence is throwing an Old Hollywood celebration to honor the 75th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz."

"We actually are literally bringing the house down at midnight. We're going to drop a house over the top of the mezzanine onto the Wicked Witch of the West," said Dorrance owner Jean Lester.

And if dinner is what you seek, Vanity on South Main Street in Providence has an option for the price-conscious.

"We have a very fun, mature, upscale event planned for (Tuesday) night. It's a 1920s circus theme. We're offering two for $75 prix fixe for customers to come in for dinner and, for those who don't want dinner, its $15 at the door and we have a DJ, a lot of entertainment, confetti cannons a lot of fun stuff to ring in the New Year," said co-owner Edward Brady.

Some restaurant owners told NBC 10 the Bright Night cancellation actually helped their business this year.

"It had a lot of effect because we had a lot of last-minute reservations because people didn't know what they were going to do," Lester said.

"We got a tremendous amount of phone calls, and the buzz is really good for this party," Brady said.
