RI residents encouraged to recycle Christmas trees

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

With Christmas come and gone, Rhode Island cities and towns are now preparing to collect thousands of Christmas trees from residents.

The state's Resource Recovery Corp. asks residents to place their trees on their curb on their regular trash days. The agency says all ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stands should be removed, and that trees don't need to be placed in a bag.

The trees will be ground into mulch.

Check with your local community to find out when tree collection begins.

In Pawtucket, Christmas trees will be collected throughout January on Thursdays and Fridays. In Cranston and Warwick trees will be picked up on regular trash days during the first two weeks of January.

In Providence, tree pickup will begin Jan. 7 and end Jan. 18.
