I-Team: Donations to Fung campaign may have link to ticket scandal

Posted: Updated:
CRANSTON, R.I. -

NBC 10's I-Team has found out that relatives of one of the possible targets in a police probe of a parking ticket scandal are campaign contributors to Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.

On Tuesday, Fung hired an independent investigator from New Jersey. He will review an internal investigation into an overnight parking ticket scandal first brought to the attention of city officials by the NBC 10 I-Team.

The I-Team reported, based on a source, that police union president Stephen Antonucci is a possible target of the internal police investigation.

The I-Team reported that Antonucci either directly or indirectly ordered officers to issue far more overnight parking tickets than normal, in two wards in the city that are represented by councilmen who voted against a police union contract proposal.

The tickets were issued just one night after the councilmen's vote.

The I-Team reviewed campaign finance records for Mayor Fung. They show that Antonucci's father, mother, brother and wife donated more than $2,000 to Mayor Allan Fung.

And the records show that Michelle Palumbo, wife of Cranston Police Chief Marco Palumbo, donated $200 to Fung.

Fung is running for the Republican nomination for Rhode Island governor.

Police Chief Palumbo has promised a complete investigation into the ticket scandal, but some officers in Cranston express doubt that a fair and impartial investigation will be conducted.
