Posted: Updated:

The Providence Police Department made their 137th illegal gun seizure of the year early Saturday morning in the parking lot of an IHOP restaurant in Providence.

Major David Lapatin told NBC 10 that Thomas Hayden, 31, of Norwich, Mass., was arrested in the parking lot of the IHOP restaurant at 45 Pleasant Valley Parkway after police received a tip that someone in a Nissan Maxima with Mass. license plates was possibly carrying an illegal firearm.

According to police when the two officers arrived they found the vehicle with a man in the front passenger seat; upon seeing the police that man, later identified as Hayden, got out and began to rummage around the backseat. Hayden backed off as the police got closer, and officers then discovered a gray plastic bag with a 9mm automatic handgun loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition.

Hayden and the driver, who was not charged, were taken to police headquarters; shortly after their arrival at the station police found that Hayden was also allegedly carrying a small quantity of heroin.
