PROVIDENCE -

Providence police said that a city councilman was assaulted by a group of men as he tried to intervene in a fight with a friend outside a hookah bar.

Police said Davian Sanchez, the Ward 11 councilman, said a man got into a fight with his friend after they left Escape Bar and Grille at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

According to police, Sanchez said two other men jumped him as he tried to break up the fight.

Sanchez told The Providence Journal he broke away and called police. But the councilman said as he was on the phone with police, the group came back.

Sanchez told the newspaper that a car drove up behind him and knocked him down. The assailants beat him again as he tried to get up.

Eventually, Sanchez and his friend fled and the councilman later called police from his home at 3 a.m.

The newspaper reported Sanchez's face was swollen and cut up, but that he declined medical treatment.
