Pawtucket gets 6 new officers

Six Pawtucket Police Department recruits, who graduated from the R.I. Municipal Police Training Academy were sworn in to their duties as the city's newest police officers in a ceremony Wednesday.

The six newly sworn police officers are:

  • Patrick M. Dolan, 22, of Worcester, Mass., who holds a bachelor's in criminal justice from Roger Williams University and ranked second in his academy class. His badge was pinned by his father Joseph D. Dolan.
  • Andrew Torres, 23, of Dighton, Mass., fifth in his class, earned a bachelor degree in social order and justice from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and was pinned by his mother Ann Torres.
  • Zachary Day, 24, of Rehoboth, Mass. has a bachelor's in criminal justice from Curry College and ranked 11th in the academy class. He was pinned by his father Fredrick Day.
  • Ariel Vega, 21, of Pawtucket, received an associate's degree from the Community College of R.I. and is studying for a bachelor degree at Rhode Island College. Ranked 15th in her class, and now the tenth female officer to join the department, her badge was pinned by her father Arturo Vega.
  • Matthew Mello, 22, of Bristol, has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Roger Williams University and received the Highway Safety Award from the academy. His mother Dominee Mello pinned his badge.
  • James Leach, 41, of Warwick, whose police badge was pinned by his wife, Brandie, is a father of three with a degree in criminal justice from American Military University. Leach in January 2013 retired as a sergeant major after 23 years of active duty in the U.S. Army including 10 years overseas and received the Leadership Award from the academy.
