Marine's body to be returned home Thursday

Arrangements have been announced for a 19-year-old Fairhaven native who was killed in action in Afghanistan.

Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez was killed in combat Dec. 11 in Helmand Province.

Rodriguez's body will be flown from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to New Bedford Airport, where it is expected at about 1 p.m. Thursday. A procession will take his body to Saunders-Dwyer Funeral Home in Mattapoisett.

A wake will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church at 34 Center St. in Fairhaven.

Rodriguez will be buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Rodriguez was a 2012 graduate of the plumbing program at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.

He leaves behind his parents, a brother, step-siblings and his fiancée.
