Warwick Station District has new name

Posted: Updated:
WARWICK, R.I. -

City and state officials in Rhode Island have formally renamed the area around the airport known as Warwick Station District as "City Centre Warwick."

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the new name on Monday.

The Providence Journal reported that Avedisian said the name will make it easier for the city, the state Economic Development Corp. and the state Department of Transportation to market the 95-acre area near T.F. Green Airport and the InterLink transportation hub.

Officials have long wanted to revitalize the district with mixed-use development that takes advantage of the nearby transportation options. They hope to draw hotels, restaurants, condominiums and shops.
