Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is marking the passage of one year since a troubled gunman killed 26 people a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
Taveras says Saturday's anniversary is much more that a day to mourn the 20 children and six educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school together with other victims of violent crime.
Taveras says the milestone is also a day for people to reflect and ask themselves whether they have done everything in their power to keep children safe and make sure nothing like this happens again.
The gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and killed his mother inside their Newtown home before driving to the school and took his own life as police arrived.
Taveras says he is committed to working with everyone to address mental health and find comprehensive firearm safety solutions.
