A Hopkinton man convicted of killing his roommate is looking for a sentence reduction.
Jared Tefft, 30, pleaded no contest in June to second-degree murder and first-degree arson.
Prosecutors say Tefft killed Peter Newman, doused his body in gasoline and set their house on fire on Jan. 26, 2011.
Tefft was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison, but he appeared before a judge last week to ask for a lesser sentence.
The Westerly Sun reported that Tefft waived his right to ask for a sentence reduction as part of his plea agreement.
Tefft's attorney said a parole board could look at the situation in seven or eight years if Tefft gets good time credits.
