RI gun permit tiff puts officials' jobs in danger

Posted: Updated:

The Rhode Island town of Exeter (EX'-eh-tur) has become a battleground in the broader debate over gun laws as residents decide whether to recall four council members who wanted to tweak the way concealed gun permits are issued.

Voters will decide Dec. 14 whether to oust the officials, who wanted the attorney general to oversee permits for the town. Right now the town clerk handles the permits.

Gun rights supporters say the council members ignored concerns that the proposal would make it harder to obtain a permit. They collected hundreds of signatures to put the recall to voters.

The officials facing recall say gun rights supporters want to make an example of them.

If the council members are recalled, they will be replaced with the losing candidates from the last election.
