CRANSTON, R.I. -

A high-speed police chase Thursday that started in Pawtucket ended with a crash in Cranston and a person in custody.

Pawtucket police said officers were investigating a hit-and-run accident that happened on East Avenue at about 2:20 p.m.

Police said the fleeing vehicle, a silver SUV, was stolen. According to police, the SUV was located near the accident scene.

Police said an officer attempted to stop the SUV on Pleasant Street near James Street. The officer was outside of his patrol car on the sidewalk. Police said the suspect drove the SUV onto the sidewalk and at the officer. According to police, the officer avoided the SUV and fired at the car. Police said the bullet hit the car, and neither the officer nor the driver was injured.

Police said the SUV fled onto Route 95 south.

NBC 10 reported the SUV sped through Providence and damaged multiple cars before being cornered by Cranston police on Arcadia Avenue in Cranston.

It was not immediately known if anyone was injured in any of the crashes.

The driver also hit a school bus near Park View Middle School in Cranston. No students were injured.

"Luckily there were no kids or people on the road. It was just radical. (The car) was sideways and (the driver) hit the front end of my car and ripped the front end off," said Cynthia Dugas, whose car was hit on Park Avenue when the driver was trying to elude police.

Police have not released the name of the suspect.

Pawtucket police said the Rhode Island State Police and the attorney general's office are assisting with the investigation.
