Zoo mourns beloved seal

Posted: Updated:

The Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford says it has lost one of its most beloved animals.

Sandy, a 33-year-old Atlantic harbor seal, has died.

The seal had been receiving treatment for liver disease that was diagnosed in the fall. But zoo staff said the condition would not improve and they made the decision to euthanize the animal before Sandy's quality of life declined.

The zoo said Atlantic harbor seals have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years.

Sandy was found as a stranded pup on Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable in the summer of 1981. He lived at the Buttonwood Park Zoo since 1993.

The zoo has two other harbor seals, Blue and Yellow.
