Suspect, 20, in fatal crash faces 2nd DUI charge

Posted: Updated:

A Richmond man accused of driving drunk when he flipped his pickup truck, killing a passenger, was released on bail Monday.

Zachary Thole, 20, is charged with driving under the influence with death resulting.

The crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. Friday on Hillsdale Road in Richmond. Police said Nicholas Gershkoff, 20, of North Kingstown, became pinned under the overturned pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were empty beer cans in the vehicle and they could smell alcohol on Thole. Thole submitted to a blood alcohol test at the hospital, but the results are pending.

There was no comment from Thole or his family after court.

Thole was freed on $10,000 bail, with conditions. He cannot drive, he cannot drink alcohol, he must undergo an alcohol abuse evaluation, and he has a curfew. Thole has to be home from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. He will be allowed to go to work during the day.

Thole will be monitored by the court and undergo periodic checks for alcohol. He's due back in court on Dec. 12.

It was Thole's second DUI charge in two years. He was charged with drunken driving last year in North Kingstown. He pleaded no contest, did community service and lost his license for three months.
