Dartmouth officer reports service gun missing

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -

A Dartmouth police officer reported his service gun missing from his locker inside the police station.

"He put it in his locker and locked it up the evening before and when he returned to work the next morning, he went to retrieve it from his locker and his holster was empty," Chief Timothy Lee said Friday.

Sgt. Frank Condez reported the gun was missing Oct. 1, the same day he was placed on administrative leave for an unrelated internal investigation.

The missing gun is a .40 caliber Glock.

"Does it happen to police officers? Yes. Does it happen to police officers inside the police department? I would say that that's a pretty rare occurrence," Lee said.

According to the National Crime Information Center, more than 190,000 guns are lost or stolen in the United States each year.

It's rare for a police pistol to go missing, but in one week NBC 10 reported on two such instances.

An officer in the East Providence Police Department said he had his gun stolen from his home.

NBC 10 was the first to learn and report the officer's son was arrested for another crime but was questioned about the theft.

On Friday, both the East Providence and Dartmouth guns were still missing.

"We are always concerned when an unaccounted for firearm may be in the community. But even more so that it's ours -- that it's our firearm," Lee said.

Lee said there's no specific protocol for when officers lose or have their guns stolen. He said police treat it like any other crime. The officer has to report it, and the department will investigate.
