Youth basketball coach faces child porn charges

Posted: Updated:

A youth basketball coach was released on bail Monday after he was charged with possessing child pornography.

Jason Elliott, 41, of Pawtucket, was arrested Friday by Rhode Island State Police.

"A clinical social worker who was treating Mr. Elliott became concerned about some of his actions and statements and contacted our computer crimes unit," said Maj. Todd Catlow of the Rhode Island State Police.

State police searched Elliott's apartment and found digital media equipment that contained child pornography.

Elliott is an organizer and coach with the Rhode Island Hawks AAU basketball program, which serves boys grades 5 through 12. State police said there's no evidence involving any children from the program.

On Monday, NBC 10 learned the landlord of the building where Elliott was living when police arrested him, put a notice on neighbors' doors saying those in the house were distressed and shaken by the allegations and that Elliott no longer lived there.

"I think it's a blessing. It puts our mind at ease to some degree. That's a good thing," said neighbor Jeanne Mikaelian.

Mikaelian said she was disturbed by the alleged activity.

"We need to be really, really vigilant to make sure our children are safe," she said.

Elliott is next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 7.
