Computer virus hits Swansea police

Posted: Updated:
SWANSEA, Mass. -

The Swansea Police Department said Friday its computer system was infected by a virus that automatically encrypts the computer's files.

Officials said they had to pay $750 through the anonymous Bitcoin exchange to get the files decrypted.

Police said personal information was not accessed.

Officials said computer analysts are now tightening security on the department's computer system.
