Contractor says natural gas line wasn't marked

Posted: Updated:
WOONSOCKET, R.I. -

The owner of a demolition company that struck an underground natural gas line in Woonsocket said Thursday the line was not marked.

Bilray Demolition struck the line on Lincoln Street, causing a leak that forced the evacuation of surrounding homes. The gas was turned off and residents were allowed to return.

No injuries were reported.

The owner of Bilray said there were no markings to indicate a gas line under the street, but he said he had the city's permission to dig.

The crew was capping a sewer line at an empty lot.

There was no immediate response from the city or Dig Safe.
