PROVIDENCE -

The first witnesses were called Tuesday in the murder trial of Leron Porter.

Porter is accused of killing a 17-year-old Providence girl during a fight on Federal Hill in 2011.

A judge ordered observers in the courtroom not to nod or gesture during witness testimony. An outburst interrupted opening statements on Friday.

The jury took a tour of the crime scene on Spruce Street where 17-year-old Tiphany Tallo was shot and her older sister was stabbed.

When jurors returned to Superior Court, they heard from the prosecution's first witness.

Gian Benedetti testified that he saw the altercation from his window. He said he can't identify the shooter, but he said he saw a black man holding a gun who was wearing a white T-shirt and New York baseball cap.

Benedetti said he recorded a portion of the event but stopped after hearing a shot.

The state plans to bring 32 witnesses to the stand before the defense calls its first witness.
