Middle school math teacher surprised with Milken award

Posted: Updated:

A middle school teacher in Lincoln was honored Friday for her dedication to teaching.

Marielle Emet was selected as this year's Rhode Island winner of the 2013 Milken Educator Award.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee surprised her during a school assembly.

"I am truly honored for this award. I did not expect it in any way. There are many, many teachers in this building who deserve this award as much and more than I do. It's thanks to them that I'm able to do what I do," Emet said.

Emet is a math teacher at the Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy.

Milken recipients do not apply for the award and they don't know they've been nominated.

The award comes with a $25,000 grant.
