Local soldier's story goes to the big screen

NEWPORT, R.I. -

The movie is called "Travis, A soldier's story" and what a story it is; Michigan native, Travis Mills, who served in the 82nd Airborne, was injured in April of 2012 in Afghanistan. He's now a quadruple amputee.

Travis is still recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center, but I got to Skype with him Saturday here at Jane Pickens Theatre, in Newport, where the film will make its Rhode Island premier next week.

Travis told NBC 10 that he started working with the film's producers just months after his injury as a way to share his journey; "it was just all about getting up out of that bed, getting up on my legs and moving forward with life"

The film produced by Fotolanthropy, a non- profit whose mission is to capture and share inspiring stories like Travis'.

Katie Norris, a producer of the film, told NBC 10 "you can really look at Travis' story and be encouraged and motivated and that's what we're here to do"

Among those who got a sneak peak at the film on Saturday, was America's Cup winner Rome Kirby, who shared his thoughts saying, "it's really an inspiring story, the fact that Travis just over a year ago this happened, pretty impressive to see what he's done so far."

That comes through the screen, when you see the level of independence Travis has achieved, including the ability to drive long trips on his own.

Travis, a soldier's story, will play at the Jane Pickens Theatre November 4th and 5th. After the movie showings the audience can take part in a Q and A with Travis via Skype. A portion of ticket sales go to the Travis Mills Foundation, to support a camp for wounded warriors and other veterans.
