Magaziner's campaign raises more than $100,000

Posted: Updated:

Rhode Island general treasurer candidate Seth Magaziner raised about $106,000 in the third quarter, his campaign said Tuesday.

That amount included a $1,000 donation from former President Bill Clinton. Magaziner is the son of Ira Magaziner, who was Clinton's adviser on health care policy.

Magaziner, a Democrat, also collected donations from several prominent Rhode Islanders, including former Fleet Bank executive Terry Murray, former Bank Rhode Island executive Merrill Sherman, and former candidate for governor Myrth York, among others.

Magaziner will face a primary challenge from Democrats Ernie Almonte and Frank Caprio. No Republicans have announced for the office.

Caprio, who comes from a family of Clinton loyalists, had no comment on the former president's contribution to his opponent.

Almonte said no amount of money can buy Magaziner 30 years of experience in time for next September's primary.

Incumbent General Treasurer Gina Raimondo is weighing a campaign for governor.
